Choosing a Fly Rod

Choosing a fly rod can be confusing. What weight should I get? What length? Your best bet is to start out with a versatile 9 foot graphite fly rod in the light to middle weight range, like a 5#. This should be enough to fish most circumstances.

Rod Length

Basic rod length depends on the size of the body of water you're fishing. For small streams, a short 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 foot rod will enable you to cast easier, avoiding brush and overhangs. A medium rod of around 8 to 9 feet will be the most versatile, and a long, 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 foot rod is suited for large rivers.

Line Weight

Rods are made to throw a certain line weight. When selecting a fly rod, make sure the rod you choose casts the size of line for the fish size your are angling for.

Here are some general standards:

Light trout and panfish under quiet settings: 1#, 2#, and 3#

Average trout and small bass: 4#, 5#, 6#

Big trout, bass, salmon: 7#, 8#, 9#
